The venue for this year’s television charity marathon L-Istrina, at Charles Polidano’s Monte Kristo Estates, has been served with enforcement notices from MEPA over the last month for illegalities on site.
The latest planning illegalities were discovered by MEPA only last week when it found works not according to plans in permit, including the addition of a souvenir shop and extensions to stores and wine bar.
Last month, MEPA also found that the owners had changed agricultural land to a car park illegally at the winery and vineyards in Hal Farruġ, limits of Siġġiewi.
In December 2006, the MEPA board decided to sanction parts of the winery that had already been built without a permit, but the latest enforcement notices confirm further illegalities on site.
Construction magnate Charles Polidano, known as iċ-Ċaqnu, is this year’s organiser of the Christmas charity fest following a call for proposals by Public Broadcasting Services, meaning that the event will be broadcast live for the first time on 27 December from his Monte Kristo Estates.
His entertainment company MK Leisure, based at the Siġġiewi winery, has teamed up with TV producers Take 2 in their bid to take over the former mainstay of Where’s Everybody.
A former WE production assistant, Abigail Mallia is the director of Take 2, the company she formed with Carlos Debattista after the demise of Four People, producers of award-winning drama Gizelle.
For the charity event she has teamed up with the employers of her father, theatre director Salvu Mallia, who is artistic director at MK Leisure.
MK Leisure is an events company which provides outside catering for corporate events and weddings, historical re-enactments, and other themed events at the Monte Kristo wineries, where l-Istrina will be broadcast from this year.
