Beating disability

Mr Stephen Attard suffered a terrible traffic accident 24 years ago thus rendering him physically disabled, severe head injuries leading to loss of memory and confined to a wheelchair. But with the close support from his family and sheer determination he managed to switch his wheelchair to a walking stick. Stephen was a good swimmer before his accident and this set him on a dream.
His goal was to swim from Gozo to Malta but with a philantropic aim. Since Stephen is an active committee member of L.A.N.D (living ability not disability) a non-profit NGO that caters for persons with physical disabilities. He successfully swam the channel from Gozo to Malta on 20 th July 2008 albiet his severe disability. He not only crushedmost people’s misconception

that people with disabilities cannot do what non-disabled ‘can normally do’. But, also raised the sum of €2,714.34 in aid of L.A.N.D. The committee is deeply grateful to the general public that contributed money towards this swimming challenge.
