Malta holiday prices soar, as UK sterling goes under

A study on European travel has claimed a 23% rise in the cost of an average holiday to Malta since last year.
British tourists, Malta’s largest holiday market, face higher travelling costs with the pound falling to a record low against the euro, making travelling more expensive inside the eurozone.
They will be paying nearly a third more for hotel rooms in some European destinations compared with a year ago, and Malta is no exception.
Prices for simple, everyday pleasures like a cup of coffee, beer or water, suncream and insect repellent, postage or a three-course meal, have altogether soared by 22.9% over last year.
With the eurozone making life harder for British tourists, more of them are likely to choose non-eurozone cities like Geneva, Zurich, Monte Carlo, Gothenburg and Cologne.
And yet Hotels.com reports an overall drop in the cost of hotel rooms around the world, according to their price index, which saw an average drop of 3%, mainly due to the global downturn.
The report follows Post Office research which found an increase of 23% in travel costs for Britons in the eurozone, compared to last year. For example, the average price of a cup of coffee in France has risen from £1.55 to £1.86, while a three-course evening meal in Greece (including wine) has risen from £34 to nearly £42.
