Former Labour MP Evelyn Bonaci yesterday morning passed away at the age of 92, just weeks after her last birthday.
The Labour party yesterday paid homage to the former parliamentarian, who along with Agatha Barbara had founded the womens’ section in the PL in 1961. She was later president of the women’s section of the Birkirkara PL club and later on a member on the national executive committee.
Bonaci was elected to parliament in 1971 and 1976, and Bonaci continued to work for the PL even after she failed to return to parliament. In 1995 she was made officer of the National Order of Merit. The PL described Bonaci as an exemplary member of the party, known for her ethical respect towards political adversaries.
Bonaci lived among politicians. She first canvassed for her husband Louis, better known as Gigi, who unsuccessfully contested the 1953 and 1955 elections in the PL’s interests. His brother Cikku Bonaci was a Labour minister. Bonaci had five children, Tessie, Alfred, Winnie, John and Nadia.
