Soon after Joseph Muscat was elected Labour leader, the prime minister remarked that “Labour was removing a parliamentary deputy who had been elected by the people’s vote, and replacing him by Joseph Muscat, who had not received a single vote”.
In a letter to MaltaToday I wrote: “I can understand Lawrence Gonzi’s unease knowing that in a few days’ time he will have facing him in parliament this young, intelligent and highly prepared charismatic leader of the Opposition.”
All those who followed Muscat’s Budget reply, had the opportunity to note how right I was when I wrote the letter quoted above.
Muscat’s performance in his first major speech as Leader of the Opposition belied his young age. He looked and sounded more well-tried and seasoned a political leader than the “young and inexperienced politician” which the PN media and its cohorts, particularly The Times and The Sunday Times, labelled him upon becoming leader.
I need not eulogise his performance more. I’ll just end with what MaltaToday editor Saviour Balzan, wrote on November 12: “That in four years’ time he may turn out to be a formidable opponent to Lawrence Gonzi is more of a probability than a mere chance.”
Dr Gonzi already knows this. And he looked it while listening to Muscat’s delivery!
