European Green Party adopts AD resolution on ‘burden sharing’
More than 200 delegates from 34 member parties in 31 countries gathered in Montreuil, Paris yesterday for the European Green Party’s council meeting, which unanimously approved a resolution presented by Alternattiva Demokratika concerning asylum seekers.
The resolution concerned the report on asylum seekers and the Dublin regulations, authored by Green MEP Jean Lambert, adopted by the European Parliament by 603 votes in favour.
The report called on the European Commission to come up with ways to help smaller member states like Malta on the periphery of the EU to cope with the adverse affects of regulations on asylum seekers.
The European Green Party gathered in Paris to support the recommendations of the Jean Lambert report, in particular the concept of responsibility sharing by the 27 countries of the EU and a revision of the Dublin Convention to ensure that Malta and its people do not continue carrying the disproportionate weight they are carrying at the moment in the examination of applications of asylum seekers.
AD Chairperson Arnold Cassola said: “AD works in a calm and level-headed manner. We urge the other parties to explain Malta’s circumstances to their own respective European parties. It is through convincing arguments that we can bring attention to the fact that Malta cannot be left to face such challenges of a humanitarian nature on its own.
“The Green Party has shown once again that it is concerned about the disproportionate pressure Malta faces and seeks to bring the matter to the attention in all possible means at its disposal at a European level.”
