Of a magnitude of problems engulfing this country, Dr Austin Sammut chose to write about the soft drinks offered by Air Malta during its flights, when he wrote his usual contribution in another newspaper.
If Dr Sammut has run out of topics to write about, I can mention loads of them. Here are just two.
One: the difficult times the many families are going through as a result of the capitalist policies of a Nationalist government. The class of people which Dr Sammut favours in his writings is not aware that there are thousands of households struggling to survive on a wage of €200.
Two: Maybe we can also be enlightened on why the political class favoured by Dr Sammut is happy to encourage commercial banks to borrow our money for a rate of interest of 1.75%, only to lend it to others at an interest rate of 10.5%. Before savage capitalism raised its head with the blessing of a Nationalist government, banks gave 3% interest on savings and lent at 5 to 7%. Just imagine what massive profits the banks made off our backs. To add insult to injury, the government taxes us on the meagre 1.75% interest earned and is telling us that our pensions and social security structures cannot be guaranteed for the future.
