Lawrence Gonzi’s boomerang

Dr Lawrence took a dig at the Labour Party while addressing an audience as part of the activities in commemoration of Independence Day. Dr Gonzi said that the Labour Party were removing a parliamentary deputy who had been elected by the popular vote and replacing him by Joseph Muscat, who had not received a single vote!
When stating this Dr Gonzi smiled, little realising that he was shooting himself in the foot. Only a few days ago, when EU Commissioner Neelie Krose came to Malta, she told Lawrence Gonzi and his government, that his plans for the privatisation of the Malta Shipyards were “not acceptable to her”!
This woman, who wields so much power without ever having received a single vote from any EU citizen to wield all that power, is in a position to dictate to Lawrence Gonzi – prime minister of a supposedly independent country – what he can or cannot do. And Dr Gonzi has no other option but to bow his head to the diktats that emanate from EU Commissioners, who are all unelected but simply nominated by their own governments! And then pose with them for the press photographers!
I can understand Lawrence Gonzi’s uneasiness knowing that in a few days’ time, he will have facing him in parliament this young, intelligent and highly prepared charismatic leader of the Opposition.
In time Joseph Muscat will show Lawrence Gonzi whether he is able to attract enough votes to justify his place in parliament as leader of the opposition. And later, as prime minister.

Put your money where your mouth is
There is an expression in the English language, often used by employers and their associations to describe a well-known reality in the labour market, that goes something like this: if you pay peanuts, you will end up with monkeys.>>
