NEWS | Sunday, 6 July 2008 Maltese man dies in freak accident in Sicily Charlot Zahra A 58-year-old Maltese man, Emanuel Formosa, lost his life after the van that he was aboard, driven by his father-in-law, was involved in a traffic accident on the Santa Maria del Focallo coastroad in Sicily on Tuesday evening.
Police investigations showed at around 7 pm, the driver lost control of the van while driving along Provincial Road 67 in Ispica. The passenger door opened, and as a result Formosa was jettisoned onto the road, losing his life instantly. His relatives, who watched the tragedy unfold from the van, were unhurt. Formosa, a father of two children, had been in Sicily on holiday for a few days, hosted by his relatives. His father-in-law, who was driving the van, worked as a mechanic in a shipyard in the port of Pozzallo. One of the possible reasons for the traffic accident being investigated by the Italian police was the poor condition of the road on which the van was driving at the time. In fact, the roads which serve the Ispica coastline are in total state of disrepair, and the Italian police are investigating whether there are any criminal responsibilities in this respect. Moreover, eyewitnesses said that there was a manhole at the spot where the accident took place. Any comments? |
