CULTURE | Sunday, 11 May 2008 Du’ Theatre perform Lacuna at Warehouse No. 8 On May 31 and June 1 from 21:00 at Du’ Theatre will be performing Lacuna, an adaptation - by Simone Spiteri - of Sepja, a series of novellas by Trevor Zahra at Warehous No.8, Marsa. Zahra, while being synonymous with Maltese children’s literature, exploits his talents in ‘adult’ fiction with the observant, witty stories found in this particular collection.
Lacuna is a loose adaptation of Zahra’s works, pacing itself across the source material through thematic rather than plot-based connections. The deeply introspective, mature writings (laced as they are with black humour) are an ideal fit for the feminine, energetic approach of the Du` performer. Employing a virtually bare stage, the female performers take the universal themes of the stories as raw material to weave their own tale of four women who have no idea of who they or the other three people they have found themselves with are. There is only one thing that binds them: they all know the same song. The audience finds itself embarking on a humorous journey of self-discovery with the four women. Lacuna was created over a period of six months in 2006. The project took off with the start of a collaboration between Zahra and the group. Sepja had not been published by then and Du’ were given an early draft to work on. The group conducted workshops for a number of months, based on themes taken from the novels and slowly, sequences began to emerge - which in turn inspired the writing of the text and vice versa. Early on, it was decided that the plot and characters of novels would not be the play’s fulcrum but a creation of a new story and characters inspired by the themes of the book. The accompanying music plays an integral part in the play, as the three musicians act as a harmonious extension of the story- creating a homogenous flow. The line up consists of actresses Magda van Kuilenburg, Franica Pulis, Kristjana Casha and Simone Spiteri and musicians Tim Ellis on piano, Chris Cini on violin and Michael Galea on percussion. Warehouse No. 8 is a new independent performance space located in the Marsa area and run by the NGO il-mahzen, whose aim is to establish an ongoing calendar of artistic events. It aims to house theatre productions, music performances and artistic events with a focus on experimentation and innovation. Just recently, it served as the venue for the launch of the new CD by Sandro Zerafa’s White Russian quintet, a jazz outfit from Paris. Lacuna will be the second in a series of events for the season and will be followed by a fund raising event by DJ Danjeli later on in June. For directions on how to get to the warehouse, log on to www.ilmahzen.com or park at BOV Marsa and follow the signs. A promo for the event can be viewed on YouTube and Facebook .
