375 apartments for Manoel Island

James Debono

Development at Manoel Island promises to be less invasive than that taking place at Tigne and is mostly concentrated in the area close to the Gzira bridge crossing where a block of apartments is set to rise five storeys.
Still, the latest plans submitted for MIDI’s Manoel Island project envision the construction of a considerable 375 apartments, a 230 room hotel and even a casino.
Most of the development is projected to take place in the so-called Marina village which according to the master plan submitted to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority promises to be an “open, low level” development which “emphasises the experience of the pedestrian crossing.”
The highest development-rising to a maximum five storeys is expected to take place on the right hand side of the Manoel Island bridge, opposite the ducks’ village.
According to the project’s master plan the new block relates to the opposite buildings on the strand in terms of scale.
In the rest of the marina village facing id-Dahla tal-Lazzarett, the buildings are projected to be three to four storeys high. An open space is projected between the Marina village and the historical Lazzaretto.
A number of villas facing the Sliema coast will also be constructed. The casino will face Marsamxett harbour.
No development is expected to take place in the area surrounding Fort Manoel, which is projected as a green area. The project also includes a football pitch which will be handed to the Gzira community.
