Moviment Graffitti joined the chorus of disapproval over Malta’s foreign policy direction with the reactivation of the application to participate in NATO’s Partnership for Peace project.
“The decision is one of concern both for the way in which it was taken as well as for its implications. It is very strange that a decision of such importance was taken unilaterally without any form of consultation and without featuring on the political manifesto of the Nationalist Party,” spokesperson Chris Mizzi said.
He said Graffitti was against Malta joining the PfP because the alliance was a NATO extension that serves to enhance NATO’s political and military influence. “Malta’s membership of the PfP means that NATO will have greater influence in the sensitive Mediterranean Region. It is no surprise that the US Government congratulated Malta for its decision to be part of the PfP.”
Graffitti also reaffirmed its stance in favour of Malta’s active neutrality. “Being a force of peace means condemning the use of violence and not being part of military alliances whose primary aim is to safeguard the interests of certain countries. The entry of military vessels in our harbours as well as the reactivation of Malta’s PfP application point to the government’s lack of respect for the principles of an active peace policy which our country should uphold.”
