MUMN never had a meeting with health minister

Karl Schembri
The president of the nurses’ union reveals today that Health Minister Louis Deguara was never involved in discussions about medics’ working conditions and the migration to Mater Dei Hospital. In an interview with MaltaToday, the president of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN), Paul Pace, said he believed negotiations over nurses’ employment conditions and migration to the new hospital would be concluded this month, but he was not confident they would end in an agreement. “I’m not optimistic because there were other times when we did reach a deadlock and things just stopped,” he said. Pace added that while MUMN had discussions with the Mater Dei management, the prime minister’s office and the health ministry’s permanent secretary, Health Minister Louis Deguara was never involved. “We never had any meeting with Dr Deguara,” Pace said, laughing at the suggestion that as far as he was concerned he could have been minister for agriculture. “Actually a long time ago we had a meeting with the prime minister and he was sitting there, but the meeting was with the prime minister. From then on he just disappeared. He’s not even a party to any of our discussions, which is a bit weird.”
