Tips for tourism

Is there a possibility to reform Bugibba and Qawra? If so, I would suggest that for starters the towns should be separated from the St Paul’s Bay district and be given a more direct management system, like having a resort manager, as is done in UK Resorts. Make the most of what the areas have to offer to tourists and Maltese that make use of these areas. How long are we going to be treated like second-class citizens and tourists? A parking space in Islet Promenade is taken over during a crucial time to hold an amusement event. A free parking area was made available for 250 cars, the site has not been levelled or properly marked and had no lighting installed – under these conditions, one might as well park in a field. Streets like Guliu and Sant Antnin are in desperate need of resurfacing. New construction sites, as well as completed ones, end up with incomplete pavements for months on end. Streets are not swept regularly; rubbish is left outside from the afternoon until the following morning and no action is ever taken. Advising the residents in writing not to take the rubbish out at night is not enough, the law needs to be properly enforced. The pavement all along the promenade needs a good scrubbing, especially around the litter bins and around the benches. I could go on. But as everyone knows, we the Maltese people need to make a collective effort to make Malta a better country which will in turn also help the tourist industry, which we need, to improve. In the Seventies we didn’t even have a Minister of Tourism but things were still better than they are today. Maybe we need to look at things from a different perspective. We seem to be thinking along the lines of ‘we need the business’, when in fact, we need the tourists. If we look after our tourists properly and provide them with a good service, the business flourish by itself. In the meantime I second any letters from Mr Charles Micallef from St Paul’s Bay, as he shares my views on the tourism industry. Let us see action now and not just talk.
