Malta has been classified at the very bottom of the EU27 list of nations capable of providing work opportunities for 55 year-olds or workers who are close to retirement age.
A study published last week by Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s most distributed daily, shows Malta at the very bottom of the list with 30.8%, followed by Slovenia (30.7%), Slovakia (30.3%) and Poland (27.2%).
According to the German paper only 30.8% of 55-64 year-olds form part of the country’s workforce notwithstanding the efforts by government to re-train and create schemes that could attract employers to give work to over 55 year-olds.
Sweden tops the list with 69.4%, followed by Denmark (59.5%), Great Britain (56.9%), Estonia (56.1%), Finland (52.7%), Ireland (51.6%), Cyprus (50.6%), Portugal (50.5%), Estonia (49.5%), Lithuania (49.2%), the Netherlands (46.1%), Germany (45.4%), Czech Republic (44.5%) and Spain (43.1%).
Below the EU average, come Greece (41.6%) Hungary (33%), Austria and Belgium (31.8%), Luxembourg (31.7%), Italy (31.4%).
