To better understand the issue it would help to note the meaning of the following words as defined in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (ninth edition).
Life: “The condition which distinguishes active animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, functional activity, and continual change preceding death. Human presence or activity .”
Death: “The final cession of vital function in an organism; the ending of life. The event that terminates life. The fact or process of being killed or killing.”
Innocent: “Free from moral wrong; sinless. Not guilty (of a crime etc).Free from responsibility for an event yet suffering its consequences .”
Therapeutic: “ Of, for, or contributing to the cure of disease. Contributing to general, especially mental, well-being (eg she finds walking therapeutic).”
The recent “recommendation” by the United Nations Economic and Social Council on the issue of Malta’s position on abortion is a shameless clear attempt at bullying our nation into systematically accepting what has become the most horrific holocaust that our world has ever witnessed.
Abortion is the deliberate murder of innocent life. Point 41 of the Economic and Social Council’s report under the heading “Suggestions and Recommendations” is clear and states, “The committee urges the State party to review its legislation on abortion and consider exceptions to the general prohibition of abortion for cases of therapeutic abortions and when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.”
It has been proven statistically, in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom where abortion has been legal for more than two decades, that abortions carried out due to cases of rape and incest are less than 1 per cent of the total pool of legal abortions. Though the question of rape and incest are serious matters and the persons involved in these cases are also victims who suffer terribly, it is clear that the abortion movement is attempting to ride on the emotional charge that these difficult issues evoke in people, in order to justify the killing of innocent human life.
It is interesting to note that these ‘recommendations’ are also made for the review of abortion laws in cases of “therapeutic abortions”. What exactly is the council asking our State party to review? Well, to place it in layman’s terms, they are requesting that we allow the murder of innocent life, not only in cases of rape and incest, but also in cases deemed to be “therapeutic” where the mother may feel that to continue with the pregnancy, may effect her mood, peace of mind, career prospects or because the pregnancy is simply an inconvenience. In fact, recent reliable research shows that in the USA alone, 92 per cent of children killed by abortions are killed for reasons of convenience, not because of incest and rape, neither for physical conditions and /or deformities of the unborn and even less so because of the mother’s health.
The pro-abortion movement often uses highly debatable and controversial arguments such as rape, incest and the possibility of deformed children to back up their point. They claim that these are acceptable reasons for abortion. However, when one looks at what these figures are saying, a new and very troubling picture emerges. It is a world that is quickly darkening and we all struggle against a culture of death.
Nothing will ever justify the brutal destruction of life. The pro-abortionists obscure the reality of what they advocate through sanitizing the process with the use of more palatable words and definitions. They call themselves pro-choice, what they are actually promoting is nothing short of legalised murder; they call the act a “termination” which in reality means “the act of intervening in the pregnancy, either with drugs or through surgery which ultimately leads to the death a defenceless innocent human”.
They claim that the woman has a right to choose and that nobody has the right to prevent that, what they are saying is that the human being in the womb has no right to life. This argument stems from their belief that the child is just a “fetus” (alternatively foetus), which somehow seems to imply to advocates of abortion that the presence in the womb is not a human presence. In fact the word fetus comes from the Latin meaning "offspring" or "young one". Others hold on to the argument that life in utero in the early stages is but a “bunch of cells” or just an embryo. As though the embryo had nothing to do with human life at all, and that it may be able to just as easily develop into a cactus plant a fish or potato.
The United Nations are implying that the matter is worrying or concerning, which also implies that they feel the consequences of Malta not having legalised abortion is having negative effects on our society. The fact that restricting access to abortion has tragic side effects does not, in itself, show that the restrictions are unjustified, since murder is wrong regardless of the consequences of prohibiting it. The pro-abortion movement energetically paved the way to the legalization of abortion in the United States prior to the Roe versus Wade case in 1973.
In their quest, one of the false arguments they were fond of using was that thousands of women every year in America were dying because of back street abortions, supposedly carried out by back street quacks or else self inflicted through the spine chilling use of old rusty coat hangers. The pro-abortion movement used the iron coat hanger as one of the most recognizable symbols of the movement. Slowly the truth about the inflated stories about back street abortions and dying mothers has come to light.
Dr Bernard Nathanson, who was one of the original leaders of the American pro-abortion movement and co-founder of NARAL. (National Abortion Rights Action League), and who has since become an anti—abortionist, admits that he and others in the abortion rights movement had intentionally fabricated the number of women who allegedly died as a result of illegal abortions.
Even in a country like the United States, which is today soaking in the innocent blood of the millions of aborted humans, there is a fresh wind of change blowing. The existing Supreme Court judges are set to retire and the current administration is geared towards appointing a new team of Supreme Court judges who are not in favour of abortion.
We Maltese must ensure that we never allow these lies and others to permeate our society creating a “blurred new truth”.
Consider this: Currently, 46,000,000 tiny humans are legally murdered in their mother’s womb every year around the world: which means that, if you are a relatively quick reader, approximately 322 human lives have been extinguished in the time it took for you to read this article.
