MP’s Christmas party proposal falls on deaf ears

Civil servants could have had their Christmas staff parties after all if a proposal by Nationalist MP Franco Galea last Friday did not fall on deaf ears.
In the final session before Parliament’s Christmas recess Galea suggested all MPs donate Lm1,000 from their parliamentary honoraria towards a fund to organise Christmas parties for all employees of the civil service.
This year once again Government decided to stop all Christmas staff parties for civil servants and employees in parastatal corporations, agencies and foundations.
On Friday Galea went to Parliament with a cheque for Lm1,000 but to no avail since fellow MPs from both sides of the House grinned at the proposal. Galea said rather than using civil service employees for political gain because of Christmas parties, it would be better for MPs to lead by example.
Nothing came out of the proposal and with one week to go before Christmas it is only the Prime Minister who is afforded the ‘luxury’ to organise Christmas parties for representatives of the media and other organisations.
