Malta International Airport has had its water supply cut by the Water Services Corporation after the airport and the concessionaires located in the terminal would not take responsibility for a spiralling water supply bill which had to be shared between all operating units. The air terminal had to resort to receive its water supply through a daily influx of water bowsers.
WSC chairman Michael Falzon told MaltaToday that although MIA had arrears to settle, the impasse resulted after the airport could not get all the recipients of its water supply to pay the bill.
“MIA was, until recently, a government department, with a water supply connected to one meter which supplied everybody located on the terminal grounds, today the situation has changed since it no longer is a department but a partially-privatised airport,” Falzon said.
Companies such as Lufthansa Teknik and the Corinthia Group, and the Civil Aviation Department amongst others, will now have to take responsibility for the water they are receiving, although there was previously no apparent agreement on how payment could be carried out.
“The solution found was to have everyone apply for a meter, so that everyone can be rightfully responsible for the water they consume,” Falzon said.
