Introduce divorce

Mr J Bonnet Balzan (MaltaToday 5 December) argues that Malta should not legalise divorce since this, in his opinion, “would entice a number of faithful couples to embark on wreckful adventures”. I could not follow this warped sense of logic since to my mind faithful couples will not even be unfaithful to each other let alone consider divorce.
From what he writes one gets the impression that this gentleman either does not live in Malta or lives in denial of the reality around him. Our society is no different from Nordic Europe or other EU countries when it comes to social attitudes and behaviour. The rate of marriage breakdowns is very similar to other EU countries where divorce is legalised. Maltese who suffer from a failed marriage are prohibited from a second chance by a big brother government that refuses to provide a legal framework for divorce. This pig headed attitude is mainly due to the government’s fear of the Church influence at elections.
The strategy has failed and Maltese have now resorted to separations and cohabitation. Basically people are simply separating and going their own way without caring about the Church. People are raising families outside their ‘proper’ family and this is creating a degeneration of our society. All other countries in the world have already experienced this problem, but unlike Malta, they had politicians who were intelligent enough to realise that the only solution is to legalise divorce.
