Trust a politician

On an RTK radio programme a year ago in which the then PM, Eddie Fenech Adami and Dr Alfred Sant, the leader of the MLP, were the protagonists, both agreed that the privileged pension scheme applicable to MPs should be done away with.
“Capping should be introduced on pensions of Members of Parliament, as there is for everybody else”, Dr Alfred Sant was quoted to have said. Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, admitted that MPs should not get privileged pensions without any capping, especially when the country was debating pensions reforms.
The former Nationalist PM felt the need to support such a statement by adding that he had already expressed his views on the matter on an earlier occasion.
This notwithstanding, not only did the Nationalist government ignore these long outstanding promises, but in the recent White Paper it published, on the impending pensions’ system reform, it seems to have concluded that all pensions as unsustainable, other than the privileged scheme pertaining to MPs.
It is high time that this political hypocrisy be brought under control. The MLP has a duty and an obligation, to honour Dr Sant’s commitment of a year ago. Labour MPs must stand firm and oppose the reform of the pension system as proposed by government. Only in this manner can the MLP truly distinguish itself from the NP.
