For the first time, the ACI World Economics Committee and the ACI EUROPE Economics Committee held a joint meeting to discuss the topic of benchmarking of Airports.
The meeting was held in Malta at the SAS Radisson Baypoint Hotel between 16 and 18 November. Delegates attended from all over the world, with representatives from Sri Lanka, USA, Brazil, South Africa, Singapore and Canada.
The ACI World meeting was chaired by BAA Director Mike Toms and the ACI Europe current Chairman of the Committee Austin Calleja, who is also the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Malta International Airport plc.
MIA takes an active role in ACI Europe standing Committees. Mr Calleja has been an active member of the ACI Ecomomics Committee for the last 8 years and was Vice-Chairman and now Chairman of the Committee. The ACI Europe Economics committee acts as a think tank to the Brussels based Airport Organisation in its lobbying role with the EU on air transport and particularly in airport matters.
Including the delegates from Europe, thirty delegates attended for the two meetings.
Other topics discussed included ‘Changes in EU legislation governing Airport Charges and Ground Handling’, ‘Impact of Low-Cost carriers on Airports’, ‘Privatisation of Airports’, ‘Return on Investment and Capital Adequacy’ and ‘The ICAO Airport Economics Manual’.
