Gozo ferry waited half an hour for unknown VIPs

Julian Manduca

Puzzled commuters returning from Malta were not at all pleased when they were told that the last boat was not going to leave on time as it was waiting for minister Giovanna Debono. Frustration turned to anger for some of those present as the minutes ticked by and there was no sign of the minister.
Half an hour after the ferry should have left the commuters did not know whether to laugh or cry, when they saw the minister’s driver who had arrived on the boat on time, no sign of minister Debono.
While some ferry goers protested with the crew about the delay, several could not get themselves to protest. When MaltaToday contacted Gozo Channel about the ‘incident’ general manager Marvic Fenech Adami said “It is not Company policy to delay departures to await for individuals, unless in exceptional circumstances, which do crop up from time to time.”
Fenech Adami would not say what the cause for the delay was or who authorised it, but confirmed that “according to the Captain’s Log, which is the Company's official document, the MV Ta’ Pinu delayed its departure by 29 minutes.”
The Gozo channel general manager told MaltaToday that the delay was caused because it decided to wait for a number of VIPs, but failed to state who these were. Asked whether Gozo Channel will be taking action following the delay, Fenech Adami said: “Management is looking into the incident and will take the necessary action.”
