Be careful of double standards

I voted for Mr. David Casa in the recent EU elections mainly because I know he is very open-minded and, let’s say, ‘tolerant’ of gays. Homosexuals are amongst his best friends and he obviously has (or had!) a lot of respect for them.
I was astounded to hear him state publicly that he had no problem with Mr Rocco Buttiglione’s comments against homosexuality, saying that he respects his freedom of speech.
This was Mr Casa’s excuse to play the political game as he felt he had no choice but to follow the EPP’s vote in favour. He undoubtedly feared becoming a loose cannon for the Nationalist Party which he is supposed to represent.
Mr Casa should remember that he is elected by the people for his values and beliefs.
Deep down he has a lot of respect for gay people. So if he is a person of integrity he will vote for what he truly believes. Mr Casa’s attitude makes me wonder how well represented homosexuals are in the EU parliament.
Mr Saviour Balzan, in his editorial of Sunday 31 October, was spot on in his criticism for Mr Casa. Mr Casa should thank the editor for his diplomacy and tactful criticism. May I take this opportunity to say wholeheartedly that MaltaToday is a newspaper which stands out from any other Maltese paper because it obviously does its best to investigate and report what other papers are afraid of reporting. Keep it up!
