Having read your article about Church schools' fees (October 24, 2004), as a parent who had children attending such not so long ago I find the subject has been tackled by those responsible a little late, but better late then never.
What you failed to mention are the following facts:
- The changing of schoolbooks every year so that these cannot be passed on, not even to relatives;
- Schoolbooks that have to be purchased from particular bookstores or agents who earn commissions;
- The constant change in school uniforms, again purchased from particular stores or agents. This is also happening in public schools, or at least there has been an attempt to.
It would be good to follow up your article with these pointers in mind. It is unbelievable how some ‘religious’ communities managed to integrate their beliefs with that of money-making.
It is true that running the schools requires money, not for the teachers' salaries (these are taken care of by the financial agreement with the government), but for extras. But the way some schools go about it makes ‘The Mob’ look like a charitable organisation.
