Provisional figures released by the National Statistics Office Friday show an unemployment rate of 5.6 per cent for September, representing 8,140 people registering as unemployed at the Employment and Training Corporation.
Labour supply for over the month grew by 492 on a year-on-year basis, while full time employment rose by 294 in terms of the gainfully occupied. Compared to August of this year, the labour supply decreased by 321 individuals – a drop of 0,2 per cent.
In September employment in the private direct production sector decreased by 188 persons from the previous month, while the private market services sector also registered a decrease in employment of 241 persons in September 2004 in comparison to August 2004.
The public sector, meanwhile, employed 46,386 persons or 33.8 per cent of the total number of full-time gainfully occupied during the month under review and month on month changes within the public sector were minimal.
Part-time employment as a primary occupation amounted to 21,266 persons while there were 16,222 holding a part-time job in addition to their full-time employment in September 2004. Accordingly, all in all, there are 37,488 part-time jobs in the labour market.
