Freddie Fenech, shocking but unfair

To say the least, the article written by Kurt Sansone on 24 October, 2004 was quite shocking. How can Mr Sansone, in good conscience, write such a piece about Freddie Fenech and the Association for Abandoned Animals. Has he ever met the man (Freddie) or is he just basing the article on malicious rumour and speculation?
My wife has been regularly volunteering with the Association since early this year and I have thus come to know Freddie for the man that he truly is. Never in all my years in Malta have I met a man of such integrity and respect for both animals and his fellow human beings. Mr Sansone insinuates that Fred squanders or pockets money that is donated by caring individuals, and bases this on speculation, not fact.
Why doesn’t Mr Sansone mention the countless times that Freddie has given money to the other sanctuaries when they have been struggling for funds? Also, is he not aware that Freddie dedicates almost every hour of every day to the care of these unwanted creatures? How dare he attack the good name of such an upstanding individual?
With regards to the supposed ‘numerous complaints’ about Freddie, why don't these cowardly individuals make themselves known? If they have any shred of decency, they should approach Fred and make their complaints known; after all, he would take any measures that are necessary to safeguard the well-being of the animals in his care.
How is it that in Malta we tend to look for fault, and where none exists, we resort to whisper campaigns that aim to discredit those who have no fault. I can fully sympathise with Freddie on this issue, as I too have also fallen victim to the whims of jealous and malicious individuals.

Editorial note: This newspaper will leave no stone unturned. Freddie Fenech is open to scrutiny as everyone else and yes we did talk to Mr Fenech. Mr Cini can rest assured this newspaper has very clear ideas about animal rights.
