‘Rescue me! I’m cracking!’… typical of Mutu and friends

Chelsea’s disgraced international, Adrian Mutu is the ultimate split personality. He is reported to be in the final year of his course leading to a law degree, likes poetry and just finished reading Dostroyevsky’s ‘The Idiot.’ Undoubtedly, the choice of material is appropriate considering that the Rumanian playboy has also allegedly been doing cocaine and the Russian novelist usually deals with moral and philosophical questions.
The flashy lad had everything going for him. He became extremely rich before his 20 birthday, had a five-year contract worth £60,000 a week, and a number of slots which assured him of a lot of money. Things are not the same now, that he was tested positive.
The shamed Mutu could not bear to face his boss and colleagues and flew to Rome when the story emerged last Sunday.
According to one of Mutu’s three agents, Andrea Pretti, “Adrian is destroyed.” Well, he should be. Cica Popescu who also looks after Mutu’s interests, admitted that “Chelsea were looking to offload Mutu after a series of disagreements with manager Jose Mario Mourinho, but now the future looks bleak.” That’s a very obvious conclusion.
The 25 year-old Rumanian star would not do too badly if he now goes for Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s ‘Crime and Punishment’!
His £700,000 contract with Pepsi is already canned and Chelsea may soon announce that they have ripped up his contract, as they did in similar circumstances with Mark Bosnich two years ago. It seems that Mourinho who snared Mutu will not keep him at Stamford Bridge.
Mutu’s story is yet another exposure of the sad situation of millionaire youngsters bent on high living, typical of small celebs whose sudden found fame and fortune led them to ‘roasting,’ shady deals, frantic betting, heavy drinking and scandalous behaviour. England’s Rio Ferdinand, was seen leaving a posh night club at four in the morning when on compassionate leave because of granny’s death as his Man U colleagues were sweating it out in an important away fixture! What a way!
Like politicians the mightier they are, the bigger the bang
Not unlike politicians and public figures, these self-proclaimed demi-gods are continually watched. Once their sins are found out then they clamour for sympathy.
‘Rescue me... I’ve cracked!’
They cry out for help when generally it is too late. They declare that they will eventually seek expert advice to lift them up from the muck they led themselves into, but ignore the immortal sentence by Sam Goldwyn ‘anyone going to a psychiatrist needs their head examined’! That borrowed quote sums it all.
More often than not, despite the clubs’ professional advice, they can hardly handle their notoriety, especially if their diabolical background is nothing to flash about. Eventually they pay a price for their pathetic behaviour. The higher they are, like politicians and others in the public eye, the mightier the fall.
The Maradona Story does not always serve as a deterrent. Recently he described the five months he had spent in a mental clinic as desperate and shocking. “It is no fun being tied to a bed, screaming and (as he admits) blaspheming, crying and wanting to die!”
Pictures and details of the inflated star who became bonkers because of his addiction, should terrify people like Mutu and friends. Since August 2000, fourteen players, including Jaap Stam, Edgar Davids, Rio Ferdinand, Jose Guardiola and others have been suspended because of drug offences even though FIFA does not give details. There could well be other less known who find their name in the list of shame.
For example few made a real fuss about Jonathan Bachini, the 29- year- old Brescia midfielder who last month was found positive also for cocaine. Bachini, did not cost £15.8million…Mutu did. Besides, Bachini does not buy a £20,000 mobile phone, a lavish yacht, a number of lavish cars and get arrested for ignoring traffic lights at high speed and have an aversion to training. This season, Mutu has not been seen much on the field, but the tabloids and paparazzi, always hungry for scandals still followed his heels, as when he was caught entertaining the 23-year old porno star Laura Andresen from Transylvania. Then last Friday he foolishly admits that he took ‘something’ to enhance his sexual performances!
Somehow he finds time to read Fyodor Dostoyevsky! Perhaps not enough.

Promised mystery
During a press conference given at Chelsea’s training ground near Heathrow Airport fourteen months ago, just after he was transferred from the Italian club Parma, Mutu in jeans, unshaven, open-necked top and obligatory diamond studs in his ear, promised an element of mystery. The lad who was born in Calinesti, did not mention porn queens, night clubs and cocaine trips. When he pleaded guilty critics soon mentioned the fact that it was the same drug that has been causing his mate, Gheorghe Petrescu problems back home \and the fact that both have long been members of Bucharest’s most glamorous set.

Who is to blame?
There is always a reason why. Mutu’s agents blame his separation from his beautiful wife a TV presenter named Alexandra Dinum for making him a drug-taker and sucking him into a playboy lifestyle. Others claim that there is a difference between London, Parma and Bucharest. The real reason is that certain footballers lead a sort of lifestyle which is unbecoming for football. That’s the reason why.
