If the government desperately wants to get rid of the eyesore that is the Opera House ruins but does not have sufficient funds for a proper solution, may I suggest the area be converted into a public garden.
Clear away the remains of the old theatre, bring in several truckloads of earth, add some pathways and several benches, plant flowers and small plants, and employ staff to maintain it. A garden would cost far less than a parliament building, opera house or anything else on the drawing board. More importantly, a well-kept garden would be a most welcome addition to the residents, workers and visitors to Valletta, and would greatly improve the appearance and general environment of our Capital's entrance. Finally, if we ever find sufficient funds for a grander project such as a proper opera house for Malta, that option would still be open.
No more white elephants please.
