I fully agree with Mr Nicholas Borg’s article in MaltaToday 10 October 2004, and I wish to add more to it. Ms Micallef Leyson thinks that she can take us all for a ride with her comments about social housing in the media.
During past Labour administrations the government used to issue several social housing schemes for the whole of the population, in which plots, flats and houses were allotted for a yearly ground rent of some Lm20 – Lm90, according to one’s means, with the option of redeeming the rent in the future.
To use Mr Borg’s words “There is a Grand Canyan of difference between what a Labour government did in social housing, and the meagre achievements of a Nationalist government!”
During past Labour administrations, a plot of land to build one’s home upon was allotted at a yearly ground rent’s sum equivalent to a current month’s bill for cigarettes. A far cry from some Lm50,000 + , one has to fork out today, to buy a decent sized plot due to Ms Micallef Leyson’s government ‘social’ housing policies. With her comments, Ms Micallef Leyson can forever fool first-time buyers, usually young couples’ who were born and lived under the present administration, because they don’t know better, but to fool us, the 40+s, she has to try much harder.
Come on, Ms Micallef Leyson, give us a break, will you!
