Melita plans digital TV services for early next year

Melita Cable announced this week that the anticipated launch of its Digital Cable TV Services in Malta and Gozo will take place in the first quarter of next year.
Addressing a launch ceremony on Thursday, Melita Cable Chairman Joe Gasan described the development as a milestone for the company, commenting, “We are extremely excited to bring to each and every household in Malta the opportunity to experience Digital Family Home Entertainment Services. Customers will experience a level of quality unseen on the island and an enriched choice of programmes.”
Through the digital service, Melita will be providing its customers with stereo sound quality, undoubtedly one of the most important consumer benefits in today’s digital world. “Stereo is an attribute that is in high demand with our customer base. Our Digital TV platform will ensure that all our customers can experience TV in stereo sound,” Gasan explains.
Stereo sound does however bring about a common misconception. “If a programme is not transmitted in stereo by the broadcaster at source, then Melita Cable is not in a position to re-transmit the broadcast in digital sound,” continued Joe Gasan. This is the case with many foreign and local TV stations. “Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to remedy this situation. If the broadcaster does not transmit the signal in stereo sound quality, we have no choice but to transmit it in its original format.”
Customers in the digital world will also experience an enhanced picture quality. Digital transmissions provide a higher resolution picture than today’s analogue system. This makes viewing programmes more fun, especially documentary channels and sports events.
Another clear benefit that Melita Cable is providing its customers through the launch of Digital TV is an enhanced variety of programmes that will be on offer. Family Pack customers on the current analogue system have a package of 55 Channels. It is anticipated that the channel line-up in the digital package will consist of over 70 channels. The choice of new programmes will meet the demands of every customer, be it entertainment, religious, kids, documentaries, movies, music and sports.
“Our investment goes beyond a best-in-class infrastructure,” commented Joe Gasan. “In this business content is king and Melita has placed its hands on exclusive content that will please our customers.”
