AD to launch Gozo regional committee

At their Annual General Meeting held yesterday at the Preluna Hotel, Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson Harry Vassallo announced that the Party would be establishing a Gozo Regional Committee in a bid to expand the Green Party’s influence on Malta’s sister island following the positive response it received from Gozitan voters during the European Parliament elections.
Secretary-general Stephen Cachia told MaltaToday the new committee had already been working throughout the Arnold Cassola campaign during the European Parliament elections, establishing a communication link between the Gozitan people and Alternattiva Demokratika.
“AD’s Gozo regional committee is composed of eight persons, some of which were already involved in the Party and some of which are new faces. Following the European Parliament electoral campaign, these people expressed their interest in working for the party in Gozo. The committee will be led by Victor Galea.”
Cachia said the team will be responsible to address issues directly related to the Gozitan island. “AD’s policy and proposals for the Gozitan island are already included in our electoral manifesto and the regional committee will also be responsible to communicate this policy to Gozitans, whilst bringing their views to the fore of AD politics.”
Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday also celebrated its fifteenth year since its foundation in 1989, under the theme of ‘A Change for the Better,’ and the start of a new campaign to start collecting signatures to call for a referendum to abrogate the country’s rent laws.
“We have embarked on a long march leading towards a national referendum which would abrogate a number of chaotic, senseless and unjust laws which are a source of hardship for thousands of Maltese and Gozitans,” chairperson Harry Vassallo said yesterday.
“These laws are destroying the country’s architectural heritage and are contributing to the destruction of our countryside, undermining the country’s economy. We will not stop until the rent market is liberalised in a socially responsible way.
“Through the campaign we will give the Maltese and Gozitans the opportunity to change a law, irrespective of whether the parties in parliament want this change or not. Through the referendum we will demonstrate that AD is capable of bringing about a change for the better.”
Vassallo said the last European Parliament election result has enabled a category of voters to exercise their political freedom by choosing freely and dismissing partisan propaganda and spin.
“Through our fifteen years of existence we have always practised the principle that who is not against us is with us. We have always made alliances with anyone of goodwill without any partisan consideration. The European elections rewarded the consistency, clarity and determination during the past fifteen years. AD is no longer a small party struggling to survive. AD is now a crucial factor in the Maltese political landscape.”
