Assistance for first-time buyers

An open letter to Maria Micallef Leyson chairperson of the Housing Authority and contributor in the Sunday Times

You have often made statements claiming that this government has worked very hard to promote home ownership and the results are there for all to see.
I do not know how other readers feel about your claims but I find it to be miles away from the truth. This government has done next to nothing to benefit our young couples and if we were to compare with the past there is a Grand Canyon of difference between what a Labour government did in social housing and the meagre achievements of a Nationalist government.
If anything, the policy in housing adopted by Micallef Leyson’s government produced an unprecedented inflation in property prices, the worst is yet to come, bringing about a poorer poor and a richer rich in society.
There is talk about renting government housing. This is another fallacy. The great majority of people are in the Lm5,000 or less wage bracket and cannot afford to spend half of what they are left with after taxation on rent.
Not so the individual speculators. Take the example of two particular men from my village. They are among the richest people in town. When Micallef Leyson’s government developed the Hesri Housing Estate they were among the first to obtain a plot. One has his as a residence in spite of the fact that he resided in a Government flat already. The other, one of the richest people, converted the plot into maisonettes and sold them privately.
Dear Marisa Micallef Leyson, these are the results of your government of all to see. The poor getting poorer, (for who can afford to buy a flat (future getto) in shell form at a price in the range of Lm40,000 or more?), the rich getting richer by the hour.
Whom do you think you are kidding when you write your silly articles?
