Families claim ownership of Freeport land

Families whose land was expropriated by the government back in the Sixties for the construction of the Malta Freeport are up in arms following the headline news of a privatisation agreement to be signed Tuesday.
MaltaToday can confirm that individuals who are still awaiting a Constitutional Court judgement about their claims for compensation for land that was expropriated from them way back in 1968.
Others still are disputing the government’s right to expropriate land for commercial purposes and are fuming at the government’s announcement that it will be renting the Freeport area to CMA-CGM.
Although the government said the land will not be sold, land owners are saying it is totally unfair of the government to rent property that does not belong to it.
“What kind of justice is this?” one irate landowner said. “We’ve been waiting for more than 36 years for what is our due, and instead we get bullied by government who ignores us completely.”
On its part, the government has announced that following privatisation it will remain the landowner and that the area where the Malta Oil Tanking facilities are situated does not form part of the agreement.
