Government and university neglecting language needs

As mentioned in Miriam Cassar's letter, (MaltaToday 26 September) we shall more than welcome any contribution from the Akkademja tal-Malti Universita` to keep us abreast of any changes or developments in the language accepted by the Akkademja. We have tried in vain to acquire some copies of the ‘Fuq l-Ghatba tal-Malti’ - Ilsna Moderni, published by the Council of Europe. We have only one copy, and would dearly love to have some more for use, along with other resources, by our staff in communicative language classes of the Maltese Language School (MLS) of NSW, Australia.
We do have a prescribed syllabus, written by various academics who are also native speakers of Maltese, and who do visit Malta quite regularly. However, we have only one set of 3 books, one of which is in dire need of an update which, to some extent, meet the needs of students who sit for formal matriculation exams in LOTE (Language Other Than English), namely the Higher School Certificate (HSC). It is quite an exacting paper, and the more the resources, the better the preparation.
Our students are very committed, and travel from far and wide. It is an abrogation of responsibility on the part of the Government of Malta and the University, to neglect the cultural and linguistic needs of second and third generations of Maltese abroad, especially when they show so much interest and commitment.

Lucy Calleja
Principal
