We refer to the interview with VISET Chief Executive Chris Falzon carried in last Sunday’s edition of your newspaper.
The Malta Tourism Authority was surprised to read the comments attributed to Mr Falzon regarding the MTA’s alleged “resistance” and “uncertainty” in relation to the Malta Cruise Network. We feel that this statement requires clarification.
The MTA board had requested that the Network’s statute state clearly that it would not engage in any commercial activities, and to ensure that the activities of the Network would never put MTA in a position of conflict in relation to any tourism service providers it regulates. The board also maintained that other principal stakeholders should also join the Network as founder members, particularly the Malta Maritime Authority.
The Malta Tourism Authority was under the impression that all this was agreed upon and resolved, and that there was consensus by all the members of the Network, to the extent that a new statute reflecting these changes was recently drafted.
The MTA reiterates its commitment to continue supporting the cruise business, as it has in the past, since it recognises that cruise business is one of the important segments of the tourism industry.
