The Law for Maltese

Now that the Law for the Maltese Language has been unanimously enacted by Parliament and has become a reality, the members of the Maltese Language Board would like to congratulate and to thank all those who gave their contribution so that this important Law could come about. They want to underline the fact that the process leading up to the Law was a long one involving wide consultation with all interested parties and three public seminars at which everyone could express their opinion.
Thus, although in essence this Law arose out of the report A Strategy for the National Language prepared by the Board, it can be regarded as a document elaborated and perfected by the Maltese working together.
We want to congratulate especially the politicians from three main streams, because faced with such a powerful symbol of our national identity they managed in a mature way to overcome all differences and worked with determination and enthusiasm to see this national project through.
The members of the Board now look forward to the setting up of the National Council for the Maltese Language and the selection of suitable premises to house it, so that our language can continue to develop and will be in a position to face these exciting times with the commitment and dignity which befits it.
