A social vision

I refer to your leader (MaltaToday 8 August 2004) whereby you stated that our country lacks men of vision to steer us into prosperity.
I beg to differ with these comments and would like to put things in their right perspective. I cannot speak with regard to the other social partners because I have no right to do so but we at UHM have a vision for our country.
As you know the UHM has been in the forefront putting down suggestions of how we are to continue our country’s operations post EU accession. The Social Pact put forward by UHM, is a tool which will lay the foundations for a better future.
Obviously no real progress can be claimed if we trample on the workers’ rights and rightly so UHM is stating clearly that “putting the country’s finances in the safe parameter and achieving growth must not lead to forgetting the social dimension on this issue.”
I must point out that your leader missed a very important aspect of our financial situation. Tax compliance. If tax evasion is more controlled our country’s finances will be better off leading to less taxation.
Our country’s revival rests on a sound Social Pact.

John M. Briffa
UHM, Floriana
