Reference is made to the report, titled ‘I am ready to tango, says Gonzi,’ carried by MaltaToday in its 8 August 2004 issue.
The article reported what was said the day before during the talk show ‘Spirtu Pront’ on Super One Radio, of which I am the producer and presenter.
That programme focused on the spending by the Government of Lm9m for the purchasing and refurbishment of a building in Brussels to house, amongst other things, the country’s embassy to Brussels.
The report stated: “Ironically, while Gonzi was stressing the need for better communication, yesterday morning on Super One Radio programme Spirtu Pront, host Sandro Mangion explained that a request to the Office of the Prime Minister to invite Richard Cachia Caruana to discuss the Brussels embassy issue was ignored.”
May I point out that what I said on Saturday was the following. In the week prior to the programme I contacted the secretariat of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and left a message that I wanted to invite Malta’s Permanent Representative in Brussels, Mr Richard Cachia Caruana, to take part through a telephone link-up. The reply I got from there was that Mr Cachia Caruana reported directly to the Office of the Prime Minister, and that therefore I had to submit my request there. Therefore, I immediately got in touch with the OPM and left a message for the PM’s Communications Co-ordinator, Mr Alan Camilleri, to return my call. By the time we went on air on Saturday, I had received no call from Mr Camilleri or his office.
