ECO-BLUNDER:
Separate your waste only to have it remixed

Have you been taking your time to separate waste, or instructing your kids on the merits of separation? The bad news is that a waste collector has been re-mixing the waste after collection.
MaltaToday can confirm WasteServ’s collector of separated waste has been re-mixing the waste after collection, but according to WasteServ’s Head of Strategy Christopher Ciantar all checks on the contractor have revealed that the waste remains separated.
A medic whose office is in San Gwann told this newspaper he could not believe his eyes when he went to throw away his separated waste in bins near the San Gwann church and saw the truck loading the contents of the different bins into the truck. Nikita Arnett from Naxxar, who always separates her waste, was furious when she saw the collector’s truck mixing the waste after its pick up near the Naxxar playgrounds.

About 10 years ago the same had happened when the government had started waste separation at source only for residents to discover to their horror that the waste was remixed.
Since WasteServ placed its bins on curb sides, many Maltese have taken enthusiastically to separating their waste and depositing it in bins, and it must be added that MaltaToday has no evidence that the two incidents described above have been the order of the day. When MaltaToday contacted WasteServ’s Ing Christopher Ciantar and informed him of the incidents, Ciantar called on the public to phone WasteServ should similar incidents be seen.
Ciantar also told MaltaToday: “We have had regular checks on our contractor, stopping him at random and checking the load. We have imposed strict contract conditions on him including datatrack.
“Until now, despite the allegations, we could not prove any wrong doing. Any responsible citizen is asked to report such instances immediately to us so that we can follow up all reports.”
