Of course, as an environmentally conscious citizen I feel that some sort of eco-taxation is necessary if we are to prolong and improve our way of life on this already polluted island.
However, it seems to me and to countless others that the Government has not addressed the issue in the right way and on the right terms.
Although certain appliances are known to cause environmental damage, nowadays one can easily buy environmentally friendly alternatives, which as many have said should not be taxed since they cause no environmental harm.
However, with regard to the problem of pollution, there are certain items and objects that are known to cause great harm to our everyday living.
Residing in the increasingly polluted Sliema area, it would be extremely desirable for individuals like myself and others who do not have the possibility of purchasing air conditioners for every room, to wake up safe in the knowledge that the first breath is the purest of the day. To our dismay however, the many trucks, cranes and other relatively ancient vehicles that grace our streets do not offer this security. Instead we are faced every morning with noise, visual and worst of all air pollution. Am I to safely assume that these building companies will be taxed for the reduced quality of the air we are forced to endure?
What I suggest is something that the Government has conveniently forgotten to place as a priority. Contractors and other building companies should be taxed for what they inflict upon us every morning from as early as 6am. That way, the Government could get as much money as it wishes from those who are responsible for the dirt and pollution we endure. I wonder – what view will win this time – the voice of the people or that of ‘friends’?
