More dolphin exploiting tricks

CETFREE is a coalition of local and international NGO's and we believe that education on marine life cannot be accomplished through the use of animals in captivity.
Four years ago we wrote to the authorities to urge them not to allow further importation of marine mammals into the Maltese Islands. Yet another of the local captive dolphins had died. Today, only one dolphin survives of the original four. It has been in Malta for more than 10 years and is still forced to perform acts.
Needless to say, our letter was ignored and unfortunately last year another 6 dolphins were brought over. These were caught from the wild in Cuban waters and are being trained to carry out circus-like tricks which are blatantly advertised for their supposed ‘educational’ value.
The dramatic change faced by such animals when trapped in concrete enclosures is a far cry from life in the open waters with its freedom and all the complex social patterns involved. Such a practise can never be justifiable and it is inherently cruel.
Moreover, swimming with such dolphins should be banned as even though they may be trained they are, after all, wild and unpredictable animals. It was also noted by visitors that shows with dolphins are often accompanied by extremely loud and deafening music which is surely not the best environment for such sensitive animals.
The general public, tourists, educators who are interested
in animal welfare should look into the matter and support true educational and conservation projects. Those interested can contact me on 7947 2950 ntsec@waldonet.net.mt
