MEPs should safeguard hunters’ interests

The forthcoming elections on 12 June 2004 will see five Maltese citizens selected to represent our country in the European Parliament. For the first time ever Malta will participate actively in the decision-making of the European Union, a process that will certainly have a direct bearing on the way things are done or not done in our country.
With the above in mind, the committee and members of the Kaccaturi San Ubertu augur that the ones elected to represent Malta will do their utmost to foster in practice all those values that enhance the democratic spirit. Since hunting is a sport practised by many millions of people within the enlarged European Union, the democratic right of Maltese hunters to enjoy their sport should be safeguarded, albeit within the limits of the agreement negotiated by the Maltese government prior to Malta’s entry into the EU. In this respect we wish to confirm that our association seeks to promote the sporting aspects of shooting, the eradication of poaching and illegal hunting, as well as the enactment and enforcement of any future laws/regulations that will put Maltese hunting on a better footing within the European context.
We, therefore, urge the prospective Maltese candidates for the European Parliament to publicly declare their readiness to safeguard the rights of all those law-abiding hunters who have the sport and its correct practice at heart. We urge them to reflect our aspirations by declaring their resolve to work to bring about the desired improvements to the hunting environment in the Maltese islands. Such candidates should prove worthy of our trust, and we wish them success.
