Maltese milk should have been improved ages ago

Julian Manduca’s article ‘Maltese milk keeps farming landscape intact‚’ (23 May) gives the impression that the main need is to keep MDP’s products flowing at all costs.
It does not take a brilliant mind nor an over-refined palate to conclude that what we need to do, and should have done ages ago, is to make MDP give us decent products.
Levies create complacency, torpor and arrogance. The only way to protect the workers, farmers and the landscape is to make MDP efficient.
Convincing us that their product is guaranteed fresh and produced daily is hype. That alone should not be adequate reason for the Ministry responsible to be confident that all this should lead to MDP remaining the key player in the local industry as is the situation today‚
If the provisions in the negotiated safeguard clause, which the article quotes the Minister as saying will mean a form of subsidy, so be it. However, the idea of lumping inferior products upon the consumer and making us take the brunt of others inefficiency should never be considered. Our health, especially that of our children, is paramount.
