In order not to lose any votes in the forthcoming EU Parliamentary elections, the PN media and other officials have launched a scare mongering campaign among the Maltese electorate conveying a message that AD is in favour of abortion.
Let us go back to the immediate past and remember what had happened. A week before the 1996 General Elections, during a political debate between AD and PN, George Pullicino accused Arnold Cassola that he had voted in favour of abortion in a European Greens Conference. Immediately Arnold Cassola filed a libel suit against Pullicino and a few days later Pullicino had to make a public declaration that Cassola never voted in favour of abortion. Although it is true that the European Greens were in favour of abortion the only vote against came from AD`s representative - Arnold Cassola. What’s wrong with that?
Are the Nationalists accusing Arnold Cassola of voting against his own grouping when it comes to cardinal principles?
Where were the PN officials in the late seventies when Italy legalised abortion under the premiership of their life-long friend, Senator Giulio Andreotti?
Alternattiva has always been consistent as regards this issue. To my knowledge when the Nationalist Government, obtained a clause in the EU package deal that Brussels could never impose abortion in Malta, AD did not criticise this clause. If this clause is not enough to safeguard the anti-abortion interests, then PN should come forward and tell us.
Let us vote for Arnold Cassola who never gets carried away in the current of the majority. Let us be proud to have a Maltese representative opposing abortion within the European Green Party. So far he has already proved himself, others have not.
