Wine production will soon form an integral part of construction magnate Charles Polidano’s business portfolio.
The new investment promises to take the wine industry by storm as the planting of the Monte Cristo Vineyards, as they are to be called, is currently underway in the environs of Siggiewi.
It is believed that Polidano, Ic-Caqnu, has already purchased bottling equipment worth thousands of liri from Italy to be able to produce and bottle Maltese quality wine from domestically-grown grapes.
The wine industry is currently undergoing some radical changes as more vineyards are being planted to be able to satisfy the demand for Maltese quality wine production in line with EU standards.
EU regulations stipulate that grape variety and place of production cannot be listed on the label of quality wines unless the grapes are grown in the same country of production.
Maltese wine producers have been given a concession to increase grape production by planting new vineyards over the next three years so that the island becomes self-sufficient in satisfying the demands of the wine industry.
