Edward Torpiano
Floriana
Kindly allow me to reply to the item titled, ‘EU celebrations: Floriana bans non-residents from public gardens’ by Karl Schembri (MaltaToday, April 11, 2004).
One wonders why journalist Karl Schembri thought it strange that the Floriana Local Council, (initially), opted to keep non-Floriana residents out of Floriana’s gardens when, in all probability, what will take place in all the other gardens overlooking the Grand Harbour will be much worse. There, not only non-residents will not be allowed to enter but, even residents of other respective localities will not be allowed to enter.
This, indeed, sums up the difference between the Floriana Local Council and all other councils of localities overlooking the Grand Harbour, in the sense that, by means of this arrangement, Floriana residents were, (already), sure that two Floriana gardens were available to them free of charge.
However, in order to show our goodwill, not only towards Floriana born and bred people no longer residing in this locality but, also, towards other people coming from all over Malta, by means of internal memo 657/03, as councillor, I have now requested an extraordinary Council sitting in order to present a motion in this sense.
I now stress, however, that should Nigel Holland’s original motion - which motion I voted against - have passed, (which, fortunately it did not), then Welcome Europe’s activities would not have been held in Floriana’s gardens. |
