Men in black salute Eddie’s crowning

Kurt Sansone

The investiture ceremony of Eddie Fenech Adami as President at the Palace in Valletta today will have a sombre tone as Labour Party MPs and officials will attend wearing a black suit and tie as a symbol of mourning for what has been described as a “vulgar” appointment to the country’s highest office.
The symbolic gesture is intended to convey Labour’s strong opposition to the choice of Fenech Adami as president.
Following hot on the heels of a passionate and scathing speech in Parliament - during which the Opposition Leader criticised the appointment of Fenech Adami as President – last Tuesday’s mass meeting saw Alfred Sant describing today as a day of mourning.
Despite being critical of the appointment, the Labour Party has refrained from boycotting the office of the President, insisting it wanted to distinguish between the office and the person. The decision was taken to the chagrin of most grass roots activists.
However, the Labour Party executive decided to give a clear signal of disapproval by attending this morning’s ceremony decked in black.
Sant is expected to address a press conference after the investiture ceremony accompanied by the parliamentary group, mayors and council minority leaders.
As expected Fenech Adami’s appointment has not gone down well with Labourites but what may have caught the Nationalist Party by surprise was the overwhelming negative reaction by PN-leaning commentators and opinionists to the appointment.
