The website of former Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters, has denied the rock star will be paying a visit to Malta to premier his Ca Ira opera on the eve of May 1, when Malta will be celebrating its accession into the European Union.
The grand celebration, which will be organised and co-ordinated by the Welcomeurope consortium, made up of Sign It, Where's Everybody?, NNG Promotions and Nexos Lighting, whose proposal was confirmed following a decision by the appeals board of the Contracts Department, following an objection raised by rival bidders ITC. The competing company had rallied composer Mike Oldfield, artistic designer Robbie Williams and Jeff Wayne, the creator of the War of the Worlds musical, in their line-up.
According to Roger Water’s website www.roger waters.com, a recorded segment of his classical opera Ca Ira will be premiered on Friday, April 30, 2004, during which 750 million European viewers are expected to tune in and witness the first of 10 accession countries to become a fully-fledged EU member.
As the clock strikes 12 midnight, the minute of Malta's ascension into the European Union, a 15-minute premier of Roger Waters’ Ca Ira will be played. “This will be not be a live orchestral rendering nor will Roger be performing. It will be only a pre-recorded segment of the Ca Ira opera,” the website reported.
According to Waters’ management, as reported in his website, there have “factually inaccurate” articles and press releases published: “We have agreed to allow Gert Hoff to play back 15 minutes of Ca Ira with his light and firework spectacular at 12 midnight on the night that Malta joins the EU… It is unlikely that Roger will attend and if he does, it will be to be interviewed by the press.”
Roger Waters’ aria will also be give a spectacular backdrop designed by German Gert Hoff and Briton Ross Ashton, the latter the designer of London’s jubilee celebrations at Buckingham Palace. A joint countdown connecting via satellite Maltese premier Eddie Fenech Adami, and European Commissioner Romano Prodi, will also take place, according to the website.
