No glass houses this time

Joseph Muscat
Mosta

Reading Dr Harry Vassallo’s piece in your newspaper on the 7 March 2004, I was very much disappointed about his capabilities of being politically dirty.
I understood that this Green party chairman, was disgusted about Dr Lawrence Gonzi’s election as PN leader and future Prime Minister.
When Dr Sant decided to stay, and was afterwards elected by the party’s delegates, I never uttered a word for or against, because I accept that it is a party matter, and that’s that. What right do I have writing stories, especially when there isn’t anything to write about. What right does Dr Vassallo have to write that with the election of Dr Gonzi as the PN leader, we have the reincarnation of Eddie? But Dr Vassallo, I do not believe in reincarnation, and I do not think that Lawrence and Eddie believe in reincarnation, and even if I believed in it, there is nothing wrong in governing, as Dr Vassallo wants us to understand by reincarnation. Do not ever forget that Eddie gave you and me our voices back, by introducing pluralism in the media.
Have you forgotten that a year ago, the majority of this country gave the Nationalist Party, of which its leader was Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, a mandate to govern this country for the next 5 years. Unfortunately, this person decided to call it a day, but he did not pick somebody from the street to take his place, but asked the party to elect another leader; the rest is history.
Dr Gonzi was elected as leader with 93 percent of the votes (Jason Micallef take note).
But in the 2003 election, as in every election, the people elect the party they think has the best electoral manifesto, and in this case the majority wanted the Nationalist Party led by Eddie. Whether you like it or not Dr Vassallo, there is another four years for the party to complete that manifesto, but this time the same party is to be led by Lawrence Gonzi. What do you expected Dr Gonzi to say? That he will call an election? Be a little more patient, Harry. Perhaps in another four years you will have the remote chance in removing the reincarnation of what you called the present mess.
A day after the first election of Gonzi, the Secretary General of the Labour party, showed his disgust because Lawrence had been able to collect only 59.1 percent of the votes. Somebody then reminded him that he was only capable of collecting 31 percent of the votes; so people in political glasshouses should never throw stones. But what now, what has Jason have to say, when Lawrence collected 95 percent of the votes? Don’t worry Jason, Dr Sant had said it for you. But at least Jason has got a glasshouse to shelter him a little, but you Dr Vassallo what have you got/a political mud house?
I do not pretend to defend Dr Gonzi, he can do a better job than me, but yes he is a Catholic, but not super as you said he is, but like other true Catholics. In your article you mentioned Richard, I do not know who Richard is, but if you are referring to Richard Cachia Caruana, what is wrong by appointing him Malta’s representative in Brussels? I don’t believe that you were expecting that appointment yourself, do you?
