Top performing New Star funds listed on Malta Stock Exchange

New Star Global Investments Funds Plc have appointed Jesmond Mizzi Financial Services Limited as the local representatives in Malta for four funds were launched in Malta this week. Tuesday’s launch follows New Star’s Dublin OEIC based umbrella fund and New Star Global Investment Funds being granted a primary listing on the Malta Stock Exchange following their licensing.
Attending this week’s launch were Parliamentary Secretary within the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Dr Tony Abela, New Star International Managing Director Phillip Goldsmith and the Regional Director for Europe and the Middle East David Von Niebel. The highlight of the event was the presentation given by Richard Pease, Director of European equities at New Star, who on the outlook for the European market.
The funds listings offer a flexible range of funds managed by a talented group of fund mangers and has provided investors with outstanding performance; all four are ranked in the top quartile in their respective peer groups since their launch.
Speaking at the launch Jesmond Mizzi explains, “Since the inception of our company, which was granted a licence by the Malta Financial Services Authority in September 2002, we sought to provide our clients not only with good performing investments which were available locally but also with other investment products which were not available locally. One of the fund management companies which drew our attention was New Star Asset Management Limited, whose founder John Duffield, shares our motto in that he believes that ‘what counts most in the fund management business is giving investors the best possible performance’ or as he calls it Star Performance.”
“Together with New Star’s management we have selected those funds which we felt could form part of the Maltese investors investment portfolio. We have not only selected the more traditional bond funds but also good performing equity funds for the long term investors who are willing to take a larger risks with their funds.
“I would like to emphasis that our company will continue to provide independent advice to our clients and be very active in give client the best advise by selecting the best managers available in the international and local market place. This also means that other financial intermediaries will be able to provide these funds to their clients, by acting as intermediaries for New Star.
“We have brought to you New Star because of their performance and because we believe that investors should diversify their investment through funds which are professionally managed and provide investors with diversification of assets.”
New Star’s track record since its formation in June 2000 speaks for itself. Funds under management have grown to more than $14bn on behalf of 650,000 individual investors. Since its launch in the UK, New Star has achieved an impressive seven per cent of UK net retail sales and five out of the seven of New Star’s UK based equity retail funds with more than 12 months track record, are ranked in the top quartile of their respective peer groups.
Following are brief overviews of the four fund classes launched:

New Star UK Dynamic Fund (£ & $ Class)
The New Star UK Dynamic Fund aims to provide investors with long-term capital growth principally through investment in the securities of UK companies. The fund manager (Tim Bray) has extensive global equity experience gained through more than 19 years with New Star Institutional Managers including more than 11 years’ experience of investing in the UK. He manages more than US$300 million of UK assets for blue chip institutional clients globally.

New Star Japan Recovery Fund (£, EUR & $ Class)
The fund aims to provide investors with long-term capital growth principally through investment in the securities of Japanese companies. The fund managers both Michelle Sanders and Alistar MacGregor have a proven track record. Michelle has specialised in the Japanese market for 15 years, bringing to her investing a particular understanding of global technology, and has worked for New Star Institutional Managers for 10 years. Alastair, has six years’ experience of Japanese equities. He was previously Japanese hedge fund manager and head of risk management at Balfour Capital and joined New Star Institutional Managers in 2001.

New Star European Growth Fund (£, EUR & $ Class)
The New Star European Growth Fund aims to provide investors with long-term capital growth principally through investment in the securities of European companies (excluding the United Kingdom). Richard Pease is head of European equities at New Star. He is rated as the UK's number one European fund manager by Citywire, for his exceptional five-year track record. He was formerly head of European equities at Jupiter Asset Management, where he was manager of the top performing European UK mutual fund between 1990 and 2000. In total, he has more than 15 years' experience in managing European equities.

New Star Strategic Government Bond Fund (£ & $ Class )
The New Star Strategic Government Bond Fund aims to give investors long-term returns from both income and capital growth principally through global securities. The fund managers Theodora Zemek joined New Star in November 2002 as Head of Fixed Income (Strategy). Prior to that she was head of global fixed income at M&G and Chief Investment Officer of M&G International. Simon Ward is Investment Strategist at New Star and is co- fund manager of the fund. He has 18 years’ experience of financial markets and prior to joining New Star he was Senior Economist with Lombard Street Research, one of the most prestigious analytical firms in London.
